    • Though there is still harassment, discrimination against Christians is illegal according to their constitution. There is strict control over the church and its dealings, but that has lessened a little in recent years.

    • A federal republic since 1990.

    • There is religious freedom, but animosity toward anything truly Christian is growing steadily.

    • Population: 11,385,295 as of 2000.
    • An independent republic that has gone through almost 200 years of oppression, suffering and violence. They finished off the 1900’s with 40 years of guerilla wars, and in 1996 a peace agreement was made. However, recent elections were won by leaders who supported the repressive regimes before.
    • Religions:

    • There was an official separation of Church and state over 100 years ago, which gave much more religious freedom to Evangelicals.

India:

    • The world’s largest functioning democracy.

    • Full religious freedom of worship and witness for all religions is written in the constitution, but the Hindutva extremism caused a rise of heavy persecution against Muslims and Christians. Many restrictions are imposed on Christians. India is ranked as 29th in the world on the persecution index.
    • Literacy 62%. Official languages Hindi (language of Union, 66% speak it); English (legislative and judicial language of wider communication, 19% speak it). Scheduled languages 18.
